Is Transgender Care for Kids Child Abuse or Lifesaving?
Gender-affirming care for minors is the most volatile social debate. Progressives call it necessary, evidence-based care that saves suicidal teens; conservatives call it medical mutilation of confused children. There is no middle ground in this culture war.

A study published in the journal Pediatrics found that transgender adolescents who received puberty blockers or hormones had a 73% lower odds of suicidal ideation compared to those who desired but did not receive such care. The study followed over 100 trans youth and controlled for baseline mental health, highlighting the protective effect of gender-affirming medical interventions.
This survey of over 28,000 LGBTQ youth found that transgender and nonbinary young people who reported having access to gender-affirming care (including puberty blockers and hormones) had 70% lower odds of attempting suicide in the past year. The report emphasizes that affirming environments and medical care are critical protective factors, while lack of access is linked to higher distress.
A systematic review commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in England concluded that the evidence for puberty blockers and gender-affirming hormones in minors is of very low quality, with no reliable long-term data on mental health outcomes, bone density, or fertility. This review led the UK’s NHS to restrict these treatments to research settings only.
In 2021, Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, a leading medical university, announced it would stop prescribing puberty blockers and hormones to minors under 18 outside of clinical trials, following a review that found no strong evidence of benefit and potential harms including impaired bone density and unknown effects on brain development. This decision aligns with similar restrictions in inland and the UK.
