Is the Israel-Gaza War Genocide or Self-Defense?
The conflict that killed over 40,000 Palestinians and saw Hamas's massacre on October 7 has split the planet into two screaming camps. One side accuses Israel of a deliberate genocide and apartheid, demanding sanctions and arms embargoes; the other insists it is a righteous war of self-defense against a terrorist entity sworn to its destruction. University campuses are burning, diplomats are shouting, and social media has become a battlefield of unverified atrocity footage. There is no middle ground between 'ree Palestine' and 'Never Again'. The moral chasm is absolute.

In January 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that it is 'plausible' that Israel's military operations in Gaza constitute genocide, and issued provisional measures ordering Israel to take all measures within its power to prevent acts of genocide, including killing, causing serious bodily or mental harm, and deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction of Palestinians in Gaza. The court also ordered Israel to enable the provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian population.
As of August 2024, the Gaza Health Ministry reported that the death toll from Israel's military offensive has exceeded 40,000 Palestinians, with a significant majority being women and children. The ministry's data, widely cited by the United Nations and humanitarian organizations, indicates that entire neighborhoods have been destroyed, and critical infrastructure including hospitals and schools has been systematically targeted, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis and accusations of genocide from human rights groups and UN special rapporteurs.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas-led militants launched a coordinated assault on southern Israel, killing at least 1,200 people, including civilians and soldiers, and abducting over 250 hostages. The attack involved deliberate targeting of civilians, mass killings in kibbutzim and at a music festival, and documented acts of sexual violence and torture. Israeli and international forensic investigations have confirmed these atrocities, which triggered Israel's subsequent military campaign in Gaza as an exercise of its right to self-defense under international law, as recognized by several governments.
The Israeli Defense orces (ID) have implemented extensive measures to reduce civilian harm during operations in Gaza, including dropping leaflets, making phone calls, sending text messages, and using 'roof knocking' (dropping non-explosive munitions as warnings) before strikes. Additionally, the ID states it uses precision-guided munitions and targets only military objectives, such as Hamas command centers, weapons depots, and tunnel networks, which are deliberately embedded within civilian infrastructure. These practices are cited by Israel and its allies as evidence that the campaign is not genocidal but a lawful self-defense operation aimed at dismantling Hamas's military capabilities.
